Continue a draft without hijacking it

Give the model a job, not a vague command.

The old version of this page offered a narrow generation form. The more durable approach is a reusable skill brief: define the audience, decision, evidence, voice, and constraints before asking any model to draft.

Prepare these inputs

• The complete draft with the stopping point marked, including title, headings, citations, notes, and any earlier sections needed for context
• The intended next job—develop evidence, explain a mechanism, address an objection, transition, or conclude—and the desired length
• A protected ledger of facts, names, chronology, claims, quotations, terminology, narrative rules, and details that remain unknown
• Observable voice cues from the draft or an approved sample, plus the audience, format, point of view, and unacceptable directions

Guardrails that belong in the prompt

• Do not introduce new facts
• Match the existing register
• Keep alternatives clearly separated
• Separate facts, assumptions, and recommendations.
• Preserve names, numbers, quotations, terminology, and links exactly.

Extend the draft from its unresolved editorial promise.

Continuing a draft is not permission to invent the next fact, plot point, commitment, or conclusion. First identify what the existing passage has promised the reader and what remains unresolved. Then produce the smallest coherent continuation from supplied evidence, label alternative directions, and leave gaps visible when the source does not determine what should come next.

   Map the argument at the stopping point

   Summarize what the draft has established, the question or tension currently open, and the next editorial job implied by structure. Separate explicit statements from plausible directions and flag any contradiction or missing premise that blocks continuation.

   Check: The map describes the actual draft and does not convert an implication, brainstorm, or placeholder into an established fact.

   Choose bounded continuation branches

   Offer two short direction statements when the source permits more than one path, naming the assumption behind each. Prefer a question or placeholder when an essential example, decision, fact, or ending has not been supplied.

   Check: Alternatives remain visibly separate, and neither branch smuggles in a person, event, result, source, or commitment.
3. 03

   Write only the approved next unit

   Continue for the requested paragraph or section using the draft's point of view, sentence movement, vocabulary, and level of formality. Reuse protected terminology exactly and keep quotations, causal claims, dates, and numbers tied to their sources.

   Check: The continuation performs one next job and stops before unsupported material would be needed to proceed.
4. 04

   Join, compare, and disclose assumptions

   Read the final source sentence and continuation together for logic, rhythm, reference clarity, and repetition. Compare every new proposition with the protected ledger, then return assumptions, unresolved gaps, and a sentence-level change note.

   Check: The join feels coherent while every added proposition remains sourced, requested as interpretation, or clearly marked for review.

Before drafting, ask up to three questions only if an answer would materially change the result. Then return the deliverable followed by a short verification checklist.

Continue a pilot update without inventing a result

• The continuation uses only the supplied duration, team count, routing behavior, limitation, and unchanged target.
• It explicitly refuses to turn clearer ownership into an unsupported resolution-time result.
• The expansion decision remains unmade because the source contains neither an approval nor supporting evidence.

Check the expensive mistakes first.

Reject fluent output that breaks the brief.

• Guessing the writer's intended conclusion and presenting that plausible direction as the only coherent continuation
• Adding a familiar statistic, anecdote, quotation, customer identity, plot event, or commitment to make the next paragraph feel complete
• Matching surface habits such as sentence length while changing point of view, certainty, causal meaning, or the argument's actual direction
• Generating several pages when one transitional unit was requested, making unsupported drift harder to detect and reverse
