Write useful alt text for images

Give the model a job, not a vague command.

The old version of this page offered a narrow generation form. The more durable approach is a reusable skill brief: define the audience, decision, evidence, voice, and constraints before asking any model to draft.

Prepare these inputs

• The final image or an exact human-verified description of everything visibly meaningful in it
• The surrounding heading, body copy, control label, caption, link destination, and page task
• The image's role: informative, functional, text-bearing, complex, redundant, or purely decorative
• Names, products, data, identities, visible wording, and terminology that a responsible reviewer has verified

Describe the image's job in this exact context.

Alt text is not a caption, a filename, or a container for search phrases. Its job depends on the image's purpose beside the surrounding content. The same photograph may need a functional description, a concise account of meaningful detail, information carried by visible text, or empty alternative text when it contributes nothing beyond decoration.

   Determine what the image contributes

   Read the surrounding page and ask what a reader would miss if the image were unavailable. Classify its role in this context rather than from appearance alone; an image inside a link or control may communicate an action, while the same image beside complete text may be decorative.

   Check: The chosen treatment explains the image's page-level purpose and does not duplicate information merely because it is visible.

   Extract only verified meaningful details

   List objects, relationships, state, visible wording, and data needed for the page task. Use supplied names only when identity is verified, preserve exact meaningful text, and flag any uncertain feature rather than inferring material, emotion, demographic identity, intent, or off-frame context.

   Check: Every descriptive detail can be pointed to in the final image or in the reviewer-approved context supplied with it.

   Choose the shortest complete treatment

   Write natural alternative text around the meaningful contribution, without boilerplate announcing that it is an image. For a purely decorative or fully redundant image, recommend an empty alt value and ensure the implementation hides it appropriately instead of omitting the decision.

   Check: The text conveys the necessary equivalent without keyword lists, nearby-copy repetition, subjective flourish, or unsupported interpretation.

   Review in the rendered experience

   Check the final asset, context, accessible name, link or control behavior, and reading sequence together. Ask a human reviewer to confirm facts and usefulness, especially for charts, diagrams, screenshots, products, or identities that need a longer explanation elsewhere.

   Check: The implemented alternative works with surrounding content and interaction, and complex information has an accessible source beyond a compressed phrase.

• The verified product name and color provide orientation without repeating the capacity, price, or the fact that this is an image.
• It does not infer materials, water resistance, a wearer, or any feature outside the displayed source description.

Check the expensive mistakes first.

Reject fluent output that breaks the brief.

• Generating text from a filename or page keyword while never inspecting the final image and its surrounding context
• Describing every visible detail even when it adds noise, repeats nearby text, or obscures the image's actual function
• Inferring identity, emotion, material, causality, or unseen context that neither the image nor an approved source establishes
• Using missing alternative text by accident when an intentional empty value and appropriate decorative treatment are required
